How to Pass CompTIA Network+ N10-009 (2026): A 4-Week Study Plan
A domain-weighted study plan for CompTIA Network+ N10-009 — where the points are, a 4-week schedule, subnetting and troubleshooting tactics, PBQ strategy, and how to know you're ready.
Network+ is the certification that turns "I've configured a home router" into "I understand how networks actually work." N10-009 is the current version (N10-008 retired at the end of 2024), and it's a fair but broad exam: a lot of terminology, some real subnetting, and troubleshooting scenarios that reward a methodical approach. This is a plan to pass it in about four weeks.

Start from the weighting
N10-009 has five domains. Design your study time around them:

Troubleshooting (24%) and Networking Concepts (23%) are the two biggest domains — together nearly half the exam. Concepts is the foundation everything rests on; Troubleshooting is where that knowledge gets applied under a scenario. Weight your time here, but don't neglect Implementation (20%), which is heavy on protocols and ports you must simply know cold.
The 4-week plan
Assumes ~8–12 hours a week. Compress if you already work in IT; stretch if networking is brand new.
Week 1 — Concepts and the OSI model (Domain 1, 23%).
The vocabulary and mental model for everything else: the OSI and TCP/IP models (and mapping devices/protocols to layers), common ports and protocols (memorize them — they appear everywhere), IPv4 addressing and classes, and network topologies and types (LAN/WAN/PAN, star/mesh). This is rote-heavy; use flashcards for ports.
Week 2 — Subnetting and implementation (Domain 2, 20%).
The one genuinely mathematical skill: subnetting. Practice until CIDR notation, subnet masks, host counts, and network/broadcast addresses are automatic — you'll be slow at first and fast with reps. Then routing and switching concepts (VLANs, STP, static vs. dynamic routing), and wireless standards and configuration.
Week 3 — Operations and security (Domains 3 + 4, 33% combined).
Operations: network documentation, monitoring and metrics, high availability and disaster recovery, and performance concepts. Security: common attacks (on-path, DoS, spoofing, social engineering) and their defenses, hardening, network access control, and secure protocols. Learn attack + mitigation as a pair.
Week 4 — Troubleshooting and full-length practice (Domain 5, 24% + review).
Learn CompTIA's troubleshooting methodology in order (identify the problem → establish a theory → test it → plan → implement → verify → document) — questions test the steps and sequence. Know the tools (ping, traceroute, ipconfig/ifconfig, nslookup, and hardware tools). Then spend the back half of the week on timed, full-length practice across all five domains.
Exam logistics and PBQ strategy
- Up to 90 questions in 90 minutes, a mix of multiple choice and performance-based questions (PBQs). Passing score is 720 on a 100–900 scale.
- The PBQs usually appear first — simulations, matching, or configuration tasks (e.g., placing devices, configuring a firewall rule, reading a network diagram). They eat time. Flag and skip them, answer the multiple-choice first, then return.
- Practice reading diagrams and interpreting command output — that's the skill PBQs test, and it's exactly what explanation-first question review builds.
The practice-test loop
Network+ rewards two things: rote recall (ports, protocols) and applied troubleshooting judgment. Timed questions build both. The loop:
- Take a timed set on the domain you're studying.
- Review every question — including correct ones — and read why each distractor is wrong.
- Repeat until you're consistently 85%+ on fresh questions across all five domains. The 720/900 bar is high; leave margin.

Is N10-009 the current Network+ exam? Yes. N10-009 launched in mid-2024 and fully replaced N10-008, which retired at the end of 2024. It's the only active Network+ exam in 2026.
How many questions and what's the passing score? A maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes, including performance-based questions, with a passing score of 720 on a 100–900 scale.
How much math is on Network+? The main math is subnetting, and it's very learnable with practice. If CIDR notation and subnet masks are automatic for you, the quantitative part of the exam is handled.
